Steve Vande Zande is many things. He is an artist, he is the co-founder of Redline Milwaukee, he is a teacher at MPS, and he is a resident of Silver City.

Silver City was not an easy sell for Steve.

He, like many creatives, felt he’d be more comfortable in one of Milwaukee’s “traditional” creative areas like Riverwest, Bay View, etc. But as he discovered the homes in the area he became more and more enamored. Ultimately it was the structure of his house, the simplicity of form, the iconic “house”-ness that sold him on the idea of moving here. All these things are integral to his art and living in a home that’s a reflection of that became important.

Many of you may not have heard of Silver City, but it should definitely be on your radar.  This area is one of our city’s up and comers.  We’ll dive into what makes this place great.  But first some statistics:

Location:  43rd St. (aka Miller Park Way) to 27th: Between Pierce St. and Greenfield Ave.

Housing Stock: Built mostly around the turn of the last century and into the 1920’s this area features lots of “working man’s” Victorians and Bungalows.  Many of the homes boast the hardwood floors, built-ins, and fireplaces typical of the arts and crafts era.

Hello dear readers.  I find myself in one of those months where the next month hasn’t quite started and the last month has one more post left in it.  I’m going to take this opportunity to talk to you about what’s going on in the Real Estate market now.

I've known Jessica for about 3 years.  When I first met her through a mutual friend we just clicked.  We've been good friends since and so when I started this project about creative communities and the people who live there I really wanted to make sure I included her and her great artist residence.

Dr. Mark Mantel is a born and bred Milwaukeean.  When I think "south side" I think of someone very much like Mark, my mom... though not contemporaries, both are cops' kids, both grew up during the "glory days" of MPS's music program, and both are, to this day, musicians.  To me this is what a "south sider" is.  And today that's where you'll find Mark, living in Milwaukee's southside gem, Bayview.

Anita Burgermeister is a life-long resident of Milwaukee.  She’s lived in various parts of the city but really considers Bayview as her creative community.  Anita is the co-founder of the Bayview Arts Guild, which has served as a hub for Bayview artists since 1999.

For those of you not familiar with Milwaukee you should know that some of our “neighborhoods” take on the characteristics of a small town or suburb.  Bayview is certainly one of these cases, in fact while it was annex to the City of Milwaukee in 1887 many residents still use “Bayview” in their mailing address.

No creative eco system can be complete without the folks that consume the work.  Theatre goers, CD buyers, and yes, art collectors all play a very important role in maintaining a healthy creative community.

When Steph Davies moved to Milwaukee from Kansas City back in 2008 she found Milwaukee’s art scene a little difficult to navigate.  “It seemed so spread out and segregated by neighborhoods, there wasn't one place or strip in town where you could go and find the artists.”

This month we’ll take a look at Shorewood as one of Metro Milwaukee’s great creative communities.  Why start there?  It’s a great area, with strong schools, excellent housing stock and although technically a suburb it is just minutes from downtown and all the cultural assets Milwaukee has to offer.  We’ll speak to a couple resident creatives and a local collector.  But first some statistics:
